Hacking it is fun and easy. I have merged my own xmf tool (based on pdftk techniques) into pdftk itself, to further enhance its capabilities.

The enhancement extends Adobe's xfdf format to allow easy stamping of barcodes, images and PDFs into PDF form fields.
