Hi!

Merge-functionality does what the name says... merge (together).
So two 2mb-files with the same backgroundimages will be merged to a 4mb-file.
If you want to decrease filesize you should have a look at the ClonePage-functionality:

I have a master pdf which I use for a mail merge and then merge the files to create one ouput file. Thsi as you can imagine can be quite large as the the images are replacated on each page.
 
Is it possible using QPDF (you can do it in Acrobat) to have the images loaded once and then just referenced by each page?
