Hi Eric!

First you can read in the manual what filetypes are supported.
Inside the pdf these filetypes are inserted as own objects - so they have still their own properties.
Inside a pdf all content will be saved and compressed in completely different technics:
Standard, FlateDecode, DCTDecode, LZWDecode, CCITTFaxDecode or ASCII85Decode.

A general question for my education: When I embed a PNG image in a PDF, does QPDFL convert that image to JPEG or TIFF, or do PDF files natively support PNG images?
